Whakatane has an excellent hospital providing a good range of core health services. There are over 20 General Practitioners in Whakatane and Doctors in Edgecumbe and Murupara. Pacific Health Whakatane Hospital provides 24-Hour acute and elective capability in emergency, surgical, maternity and child health, medical, and mental health services. The hospital has more than 160 beds and is assisted by clinical support services of laboratory, radiology and pharmacy. See below for more information.

In-house facilities include laundry, catering, cleaning, orderlies, store, medical information and records, receptionist and telephony and property.
The hospital has benefited from a major upgrading project. The upgrade provides the facility with three fully equipped theatres, allowing acute theatre to be maintained without interrupting elective lists. The day stay facility was improved with new laparoscopic equipment purchased.
The Laboratory installed a BACTEC 9120, which is an Automated Blood Culture Machine. This equipment is a huge advance in both sensitivity and speed of results, ensuring that medical staff can respond very quickly and accurately to infections. The equipment also saves laboratory technologist time.
The pharmacy now purchases through a single warehouse and this has saved many hours in the ordering and receipting of pharmaceuticals. The new pharmacy computer system was implemented on 1 June 1999 and will ensure the Hospital keeps up with rapidly advancing technology.
A new maternity unit provides delivery units with ensuites, post natal support and newborn unit.
