Whakatane tops as NZ's best value destination

If you're looking for the most holiday bang for your buck, it seems Whakatane is the place to go.

Whakatane hotels have the best mix of reputation and price in the country, online hotel search site Trivago says.

Next is Coromandel town, then New Plymouth. Nelson is sixth on the list, Napier ninth, Tauranga 11th and Christchurch 18th.

The best value index takes into account the average overnight price for a standard double room in each destination, as well as a ranking representing the average hotel evaluation.

In Whakatane, an overnight stay in a standard double room cost an average of $133, while hotels in the town had an average rating of 86.39, Trivago said.

Coromandel town had a rating of 84.78 and an average of $134 for an overnight stay. In New Plymouth the average price was $142 and the average rating 84.32.

"The list offers some affordable alternatives to popular holiday destinations," Trivago said.

Wanaka, with an average price of $192 a night was a more reasonably priced ski area than Queenstown where the average cost was $239 per night.

For travellers to the Bay of Islands, a stay in Paihia, where the average was $150, was a cheaper alternative to Russell, across the water, where the average cost was $306.

Auckland has the lowest index, but at 84.90 per cent it's still top-notch value when compared to global examples like Sydney (76.16 per cent), Paris (68.62 per cent), Los Angeles (64.16 per cent) , and London (54.27 per cent).
