  • Moko the Dolphin, Whakatane

'Moko' was a male Bottlenose dolphin that visited New Zealand's sunniest coastline - Whakatane, in early January 2010.  Moko was often seen at all the popular spots around Whakatane. He was often at Ohope Beach where he joined in with the surfers at West End. He also frequented Otarawairere Bay and swam with locals up the Whakatane River. Moko loved company and would happily play for hours with swimmers, surfers and kayakers. In June 2010 Moko left Whakatane and his body was found on Matakana Island near Tauranga City only two weeks later. Moko will be missed and remembered forever.
